Happy 35th Birthday, Super Mario Bros. 3. (Plus a tiny scoop at the end.)

Not the game you expected to hear about next, is it?

We'll get to Wonder soon, but this is a very important game to talk about.

Today marks the thirty fifth anniversary of one of Nintendo's most popular, important and most cherished titles. Super Mario Bros. 3 is where the Mario series established it's core formula, so  to speak. Numerous famous power ups, the world map, minigames in order to said earn power ups, the brothers wearing blue overalls, all of that originated here.

It's also an absolutely incredible game. It's controls, physics,  level design and soundtrack are just fuckin' immaculate. This game hasn't aged a single day since it released, and I'll fight just about anyone on that.

The fact that this game released just a mere three years after the original Super Mario Bros. game in Japan is absolutely astounding. Mario 3 feels like it could just be on a different console. The jump in quality was freaking absurd and not something you see very much now at all.

Obviously, it's no surprise to anyone, but I absolutely love this game with all of my heart. This was my first real Mario as a kid, I got an NES as a hand-me-down, and I obsessively played this game, day in and day out. It's insane how well crafted the game was, or still is. There's obviously always been this debate of Mario 3 vs. Mario World. I've always, always been a World kid, but man, 3 has been starting to change my mind the more I play.

Guys, I think SMB3 is THE ONE.

Can't believe I'm even saying that.

Also, I know what you're here for, don't worry. A tiny scoop, since it's the anniversary and all.

Internally, Nintendo has apparently been having, and to directly quote the sources here, "Serious discussions" about a brand new remake of Super Mario Bros. 3. The game was famously remade thirty years ago in the masterwork that is Super Mario All-Stars. It also got an array of new levels in the GBA version that released in 2003. This is just a game Nintendo can't leave alone, and it's hard to not blame them. I'm hoping they decide to say "yes" on this one.

I'm all for remaking timeless classics as long as the developers in question understand the task at hand.

Not just that, but you can expect to see a plethora of remakes of Nintendo games featured on their next console, some will be remakes of some of their biggest titles, and some will be obscure titles you haven't seen in a very long time. Expect to see some of those in the first year of the system's life.

Regardless of all of that, today is a day to celebrate. I highly recommend watching The Gaming Historian's video on the history of Super Mario Bros. 3. It's an absolutely incredibly well done video and I've watched it at least a dozen times at this point and I'm gonna watch it again, tonight.

I'm playing some Mario 3 today. I hope you are too.

  1. Yeah, Zippo you lied about multiple things in regards to Super Mario Wonder. You said that that Wonder was going to be as hard as Super Mario Bros 3 and that it would be like that game more than any other. No, it wasn't. It's more like Super Mario World and it's and easy game.

Yu said the game originally was going to look like the Super Mario Bros movie. Again, it didn't. https://zippospeaks.blogspot.com/2022/12/small-update-on-new-2d-mario.html

All you do is post bullshit lies acting like your some type of insider when you been wrong. There was never a Mario Kart 9 was coming, or that there was going to be a Switch pro.

You spread bullshit and act like you have insider information.

    1. Aside from your claims, there are other claims Zippo made that are easier to verify, like:

      - Mario Wonder DID NOT have more power-ups like Tanook Suit, Ice Flower and Mini Mushroom
      - Mario Wonder DID NOT feature "the return of Foreman Spike"
      - Mario Wonder had MORE playable characters than just "Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad"

But while those did not come true, we need to remember the ones that DID come true:

      - There WAS in fact a 2D Mario in development
      - Mario Wonder DID have Online Multiplayer
      - Mario Wonder DID release in the fiscal year of 2023/24
      - Mario Wonder DID NOT have the "New Super" moniker in the title
      - Mario Wonder DID have a "a new art style that [took] some people by surprise" (this one is subjective though, just like the difficulty and SMB3-likeness claims)

So it's not like Zippo is completely "lying" -- there are some true claims and some false. I'd love some open clarifications on the ones that didn't come true, but we cannot ignore the ones that did come true :)

    2. Zippo is probably a person with real connections to the industry. That is, an actual leaker.

He appears to have gotten many hard-to-predict things correct. For example, predicting the exact date of the SMBW Gamescom blowout, as well as predicting that a YouTuber would sing a theme for Sonic Frontiers.

With that being said, Zippo is still deeply inconsistent and very unreliable, because his roster of failed predictions is massive, much bigger than his roster of fulfilled predictions. For every 1 prediction he gets right, he gets 3 wrong. The multiple power-ups in SMBW? Didn't come true. New Donkey Kong during E3 2021? Nope.

So even though he does sometimes hit the target, he more often than not misses it, making him extremely unreliable. We shouldn't listen to anything he says.

Zippo, essentially, is a psychic who can accurately predict 3/10 future events. 3/10 is still remarkable, no normal person can get 3/10 right. But still, the psychic in question is incredibly undependable. You can't trust them.

    3. And regarding his correct predictions, it's also possible that Zippo is attaining accurate information through certain means, maybe stealing from other leakers or something like that.

    5. And still, all the "corrects" ones you quoted can very easily be predictable educated guess anyone could make, not out of the blue things that no one could have guessed. The only thing out of the blue is the Youtuber singing a song for the Sonic game.

Everything else could have easily been made up, see Jon Cartwright's video about him making a fake "insider" account people believed in.

It is difficult to find him reliable when there is so much wrong, even tho there might be one correct thing out out of all the incorrect stuff.
Plus, personally, I find the writing style too much of a storytelling instead of getting right to the point to be believable and not for attention grabbing.

When it comes to remakes, he did not made a far fetched prediction: Averyone could make it, staying vague enough to be right, not going in too much detail to be false, making the prediction out of what Nintendo is currently beginning doing, so easily predictable.

    6. Some of them are, others are not. For example, Zippo specifically predicted the animation studio that would work on the opening of the new Super Monkey Ball. He also claimed that SMBW would be at gamescom and that there'd be a Direct for it while giving a specific date for these two events.

    7. He also got TTYD remake right.

Don't get me wrong, though: Zippo is still deeply unreliable because of how often he is wrong.

  2. Here is where Zippo said Wonder was going to be like SUper Mario Bros 3 and hard, https://zippospeaks.blogspot.com/2023/07/super-mario-bros-wonder-is-not-gonna-be.html

    We know this is false.

  3. Just in case Zippo tries to re-edit his old blog post, here is an archive link to what he originally wrote about Wonder being like Super Mario Bros 3 and the hard difficulty https://archive.ph/ox4le

  4. Hi Zippo, I'd love some clarification on why these things didn't end up in the Wonder game:

    - Lots of returning power-ups (like Tanooki Suit, Ice Flower, Mini Mushroom)
    - Return of Foreman Spike

It's all good, but being open about unintentionally being given misinformation or having outdated info or admitting that it wasn't correct info, only strengthens one's credibility :) If you have time, I'd love for you to acknowledge these and pass even a short comment on them, so people don't go around saying you're a "liar and a fraud" again :/ Thanks

    1. Zippo was banned on various websites, like resetera for unreliable sources.. Previous post of his did seem to to suggest a new Mario Kart 9 and Switch Pro. Saying that a new 2d Mario game is coming out is not a sign of him being a reliable insider, nor is him saying the new game would drop the "new" Moniker. A lot of those could be of been guessed by regular Nintendo fans.

Super Mario Wonder, in numerous reviews, is said to be more like Super Mario World than 3. It has the secret exists like World does. Wonder had way more characters than what he stated. The games level difficulty doesn't ramp up until the very end of the game, like Super Mario World's special world (which again, is like Super Mario World)

It's doesn't take rocket science to see that a new 3d Mario game will launch with the new Switch 2 console. My guess a new Mario Kart will be launched around the Switch 2's release as well. That does not make me an insider. Nor does it when I think in the next couple years we will see a new Luigi's Mansion's game, consider the previous games sold well. It's a given that a new game in this series will come out.

Zippo seems to be an attention seeker. He goes around dissing various websites or youtubers, while making himself looking like a big shot. I don't see how that's productive, especially considering at the very least, a good portion of his predictions have been flat out wrong.

  5. You know? Honestly? I respect how you don't give a f*ck what people think and do your thing, Zippo. It's really funny looking at all these angry comments while you're just doing your thing. I don't care whether the info is real or fake.
