Nintendo's Cinematic Future Is Very Bright...There's Just One Problem.
Hey, so, as everyone here is very well aware of by now, the Super Mario Bros. Movie was a humongous, rip roaring success, it's become the highest grossing movie of the year, with nothing even coming close to it, in terms of gross.
As it just so turns out, the rumors you have all have been hearing are true.
In addition to the very obvious Mario sequel and the Donkey Kong film, which you heard first from me a long time ago, I can independently confirm from my own sources that a Zelda movie and Luigi focused spinoff are all in production at Illumination.
From what I'm hearing, Zelda will be an amalgamation of very different Zelda games, rather than a straight adaption of like, say... Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, etc.
Also, yes, Link will speak.
This all sounds great, right?
Well, not just one, but two problems going on right now.
The WGA (Writers Guild Of America) are currently on strike in the world of filmmaking and television. Meaning, little no actual shows and movies are being written or are in production right now. They're being absolutely fucked over by every company in Hollywood, so this strike was a long time coming.
Additionally, it now looks like SAG (Screen Actors Guild) will also be striking, possibly as soon as tomorrow. Meaning that a majority of Hollywood's actors will not be working, not even a single bit.
This is putting a giant damper on everything in Hollywood, movies and shows have to be delayed, and some productions have to flat out shut down. It's a sad state of affairs, but this is the only way to show these horrible companies that we cannot be pushed around.
That said. Nintendo and Universal's plans are currently paused. In fact, Nintendo WOULD have already announced their next few movies in June, if the writer's strike hadn't happened.
As I heard it, Nintendo/Universal were looking at a holiday 2025 release for Donkey Kong, and a 2026 release for Mario 2. But given how everything is uncertain at the moment, it's hard to say how that will shake out now. Things will likely have to be delayed and moved around.
This is clearly a hot mess. But, people have families to feed and need houses over their heads. I'm completely in support of these strikes. If we have to wait a bit longer for more Nintendo cinematic goodness, then so be it.
Make no mistake about this though, and this can't be stated enough. Mario is Universal's biggest franchise now. Bigger than Fast and Furious, Despicable Me, Shrek, you name it. They're taking this mega franchise very seriously, and they'll do everything in their power to keep Nintendo and their shareholders happy.
If I hear anymore updates, you guys will be the first to know.
Illumination did good with the Mario movie. I am just hoping the Zelda movie is just a little more serious. I wouldn't like for the Zelda movie to be as campy as the Mario movie.
ReplyDeleteAny proof to these rumors of a Sonic Heroes remaster or is it bullshit??
