Nintendo EPD Tokyo's Next Title Is...

Just when I was about to publish another entirely unrelated article, this scoop just randomly drops into my hands.

In the latest Nintendo Direct, Nintendo just out of fuckin' nowhere, announced a brand new game starring Princess Peach. The theme of the game looks to be a stage play, which is in turn, a clever reference to the genre defining classic, Super Mario Bros. 3.

That said, Nintendo only give us a very brief glimpse of gameplay of this new adventure.I've got a few more details on the game, but let's tackle the elephant (Ha! Get it?) in the room first.

People were wondering who were the developers behind this mysterious game, and I've been given the answer.

TA-DA!

It was under our noses for weeks.

It is indeed Nintendo's most prestigious (in my opinion) team, residing in Tokyo, working on the game.

If you've been wondering where in the hell Nintendo's team has been for the last six or so years, EPD Tokyo is currently working on at least four different projects for Switch and it's next gen successor. EPD Tokyo have been steadily acquiring more and more talent while building and cultuvating more teams internally for the past five years, while they've been super busy working diligently on all of these projects, and we finally got to see one, even if it is just a brief tease.

That said, I wouldn't expect this to be a ginormous title. From what I'm hearing, the scale of the game is much more comparable to that of the first Luigi's Mansio game, rather than something like say, Mario Sunshine. This is a smaller, much more experimental title for the studio, sources way. EPD Tokyo head Yoshiaki Koizumi has reportedly pushed for a new title starring Princess Peach for the last decade, and he's finally gotten his wish.

This is also NOT a follow up to Super Princess Peach in any way. Gameplay wise, this won't bear any semblance to the nearly two decades old DS title. Which I'm happy about. I'm really excited to see what the team cooked up here. It's sure to be unique and set itself apart from the usual fare.

I'm starting to get some more details on what Nintendo's best and brightest studio has been working on for these last few years. With Nintendo's next console peaking over the horizon, this is finally their time to shine once again.

More details about another title from them soon.

Comments

  1. Doesn't sound implausible, but something about the jingles in the teaser just screams Good-Feel to me. But I wouldn't be surprised if it's indeed EPD Tokyo.
Curious about who's developing the Dark Moon remaster (could be Next Level, could be Grezzo) and Super Mario RPG (most likely Square Enix, but the UI gives off NDCube vibes) too

  2. Nice to hear we're getting closer to the Switch successor. About time. I am hoping that backwards compatibility will allow for games to run smoother than before.
