SEGA Is Delisting The Classic Sonic Games. Good Or Bad?

In a move that surprises absolutely no one, SEGA is delisting the original 3 Genesis Sonic games from all digital platforms, ahead of Origins imminent release in June. There's been a lot of takes on this, with black and white views on the situation. I'm gonna go into the greys here.

This is being done for multiple reasons:

1. To Declutter The Marketplace:

There's so many different versions of the Genesis Sonic games that it's caused a shit load of confusion among consumers.  Just on Switch alone, there's *four* versions of Sonic 2 you're going to able to play.  The Xbox One Itself itself has a bunch of ways you can experience the OG trilogy, thanks to it's backwards compatiblity. This situation is a mess, and they should have made this easier for folks years ago.

2. More Reasons To Buy Origins:

SEGA is also doing this to ensure that the average person buys Origins. Why would they buy the collection for 40 bucks when they can just buy a version of Sonic 3&K for 5 bucks on Steam? The Ages versions for Switch are the exception just because those have their own extra features and whatnot. Is delisting games by default, scummy? Yes, but, at the same time, it also makes things less confusing for the consumer, which is a good thing in my mind. These are also going to be the definitive versions of these classic games, and animated intros and endings thrown in for good measure. All of these old emulated versions are no longer needed.

3. The Sonic 3 Music Situation:

It's pretty obvious what I mean here. SEGA can no longer ignore the elephant in the room. The Steam and XBLA versions of Sonic 3&K have gotta go.

This music mess was the Catch 22 to the entire collection. The fact of the matter is, they shouldn't have ever have used that music to begin with.

I'll just give a PSA here:

You are not getting the MJ tracks in Origins, and you're probably never getting them again.

SEGA has been quiet on this front for a reason.

I said this from the very start, people have had a year to mentally prepare for this reality, and that's unfortunately how it's going to be from now on. SEGA's lawyers are ready to be done with this 30 year legal nightmare.

You can find that and all the other details that were confirmed in my old blog post here:

I've got two articles coming before a big personal announcement, so stay tuned and thanks as always for reading.

Comments

  1. It's actually good that the beta Sonic the Hedgehog 3 leaked since it informed the fanbase of the original intention of those tracks being the intended ones.

  2. Why haven't you commented on the false Akechi game leak you posted?

  3. I can't blame SEGA for delisting the OG trilogy. If I had to sell this game I would've done the same thing. I know of people who don't understand what the collection is and not sure what the benefits are. It's the same thing with the original mobile remaster release, once it's in people's hands they'll understand.

That being said I still don't think this collection should be $40. Should be $25 at the max. The whole penny pinching with the deluxe edition was also a bone headed move.
